How to Apply

Create a USAJOBS profile

First, create and complete your profile to apply for any job on USAJOBS.

With a USAJOBS profile, you can save jobs, automate job searches, and manage everything you need to complete your application, including resumes and required documents.

Search for jobs

Once you create your profile, you can search for jobs.

It's best to sign into your profile before searching. Why? We can use your information to improve your job search results.

You can also use filters such as location, salary, work schedule or agency to narrow your results.

Review job announcement

If you find a job you're interested in, read the entire announcement to determine if you're eligible and meet the qualifications. It's important to read the announcement because there are required qualifications you must meet and include in your application.

Prepare your application in USAJOBS

Read the How to Apply section of the job announcement before starting your application. Click Apply, and we'll walk you through a five-step process where you'll attach a resume and any required documents.

During the application process, you can review, edit and delete your information. We'll automatically save your progress as you go so that you won't lose any changes.

Submit application to the agency

When your application is ready, you'll be directed from USAJOBS to the hiring agency's system to submit your application. Before you submit, you may need to complete other agency-required steps such as a questionnaire or uploading additional documents.

The time it takes to submit depends on the job you are applying for and the hiring agency's requirements.

You can check your application using the Track This Application link in your USAJOBS profile or contact the hiring agency listed on the job announcement.

Military Spouse Relicensure Reimbursement

Military services continue to support military spouse employment by offering up to $1,000 in licensure and certification costs resulting from relocation or military move. Please contact your Military and Family Readiness Center.

Hiring Our Heroes Corporate Fellowship Program

This program is open to eligible active duty service members transitioning out of the military within six months from the start of this program. It provides transitioning service members the opportunity to build their civilian network, provide exposure and acquire civilian work experience by placement in mid to senior level professional positions with host companies for 12 weeks.

Eligibility:

  • Service members must be on active duty for the duration of the 12-week program and be eligible to work shortly following the end of the program.
  • Applicants must be within 6 months of transition (separation or retirement) from military service at the start of the program
  • Service members must have a bachelor's degree plus 3 years leadership experience or equivalent related experience in your field OR an associate's degree, plus 5 years leadership experience or equivalent related experience in your field.

Transition Assistance Program (TAP)

Transition Assistance Program (TAP)

Effective 1 Oct 19, IAW Section 552 Public Law 115-232, John S. McCain National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for Fiscal Year 2019. The Transition Assistance Program (TAP) offers separating or retiring personnel an individual transition plan to ease reentry into civilian life. Service Members are required to initiate the TAP process no later than 365 days from the date of separation or retirement. However, the process cannot begin until within 24 months from retirement or within 18 months from separation. MFSC provides TAP workshops and Pre-separation Counseling as well as information about additional training tracks. TAP is designed to provide necessary tools to effectively transition from the military to the civilian community. Mandatory steps for completing TAP are four separate requirements. Step 1:  Individualized Initial Counseling, step 2: pre-separation counseling, step 3: TAP and step 4: CAPSTONE. Individualized Initial Counseling are via appointment only. Pre-Separation briefings are held bi-weekly each month and must be completed prior to the attendance of TAP. CAPSTONE is held weekly via appointments after the completion of Pre-separation Counseling and TAP.

Your transition now begins NLT 365 days prior to your separation/retirement. It is recommended retirees begin the transition process at least two years prior to retirement. In the event of an unanticipated separation or retirement, or a member of the Reserve Component is demobilized with less than 365 days, TAP must begin as soon as possible within the remaining period of service. You can find a comprehensive timeline for the entire process here: https://www.dodtap.mil/resources.html

STEP 1: Individualized Initial Counseling (IC)

Effective 1 Oct 19, IAW Section 552 Public Law 115-232, John S. McCain National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for Fiscal Year 2019. Individualized Initial Counseling between the service member and a transition counselor is now the official start to the transition process. IC should take place NLT 365 days prior to separation/retirement from military service. Prior to the IC session, service members will complete their personal self-assessment and begin the development of their Individual Transition Plan to identify their unique needs of the transition process and post-transition goals. At the conclusion of this appointment members will have an established transition plan to include scheduled appointments for the required corresponding requirements based on their Tier.

IC is conducted by individual appointment at the Military & Family Support Center (MFSC) by appointment only.

STEP 2: Pre-separation Counseling Phase - Initiate DD 2648 eForm

Once the IC is complete, Pre-separation Counseling commences and must also be completed NLT 365 days prior to separation/retirement. Members are encouraged to complete their IC 13-24 months prior to separation/retirement. Pre-separation Counseling covers by-law information to include benefits, entitlements and resources for eligible transitioning service members. Caregivers and spouses are especially encouraged to attend Pre-separation Counseling with their service member.

STEP 3: 3-Day TAP Curriculum Workshop

This multi-day course provides members with information and skills needed for a successful transition.

Day 1: VA Benefits and Services. Required for all – no exemptions.

Day 2: DoD Transition Day - This portion of TAP includes curriculum modules on building resiliency by managing your own transition (MyTransition), a Military Occupational Code Crosswalk to help define and translate military skills and the Financial Plan for Transition module which fulfills the mandated financial literacy requirement. Required for all – no exemptions.

Day 3: DoL Employment Fundamentals of Career Transition (EFCT) – Some exemptions apply

The transitioning service member may elect one or more of these 2-day tracks based on their Tier:

◘  DoL Employment Track

◘  DoL Vocational Track

◘  DoD Higher Education Track

◘  SBA Entrepreneurship Track

STEP 4: CAPSTONE Phase - Complete DD 2648 eForm

The CAPSTONE is the culminating event where a transition counselor will verify completion of required Career Readiness Standards (deliverable) as determined during the service members IC appointment. CAPSTONE must be completed NLT 90 days prior to separation/retirement.
